Has anyone used Slack to facilitate team communications for show production? If so, any ideas, suggestions or a way to import a successful template, please? Or is it yet another distraction?

Theater Rental Fees

I am writing from Plattsburgh NY. A small town in upstate New York near the Canadian border. After many years of renovation our local historic theater "The Strand" is readying for a grand reopening.

The Strand will seat around 1,000 when in operation. The city of Plattsburgh and the surrounding area has a population of 80,000. The arts council which owns the theater is seeking advice on rental opportunities for the theater. Do theaters in your area charge a flat fee for a presenter, a ticket surcharge, a percentage of the box office, etc.
Anything you could tell us would be of great assistance

Little Mermaid Score

We are doing The Little Mermaid, Jr. as our Spring Musical. MTI only licenses the piano score. We would like to use a small ensemble for our music. I'm wondering if anyone has arranged this score for other instruments and if we could rent or purchase it.

Theatre Hierarchy

I'm helping a struggling Shakespeare Comany restructure their company. Right now chaos is in control and they will close their doors in a matter of weeks if things don't turn around. I have volunteers in place, but their is no structure to the organization.

Example: their audi tech is leaving. I found them some volunteers. When the vollunteers asked "When do you need me? Who do I call for scheduling? Who should I report to?" they were given 6 different names and numbers and none of them seemed to have the same information.

Does anyone have a basic flow chart? I know they exist I saw one when I had my theatre managment class in colege, but that was many moons ago and i don't even remember what the text book was.

I am open to all suggestions.

How to safely approach an executive director on ideas & thoughts

Hello Theater Face,

I got ask this question and hopefully I get some insight on an issue currently facing a community theater that I am part of. The theater hired a new executive director who has no theater experience expect from going to show now & then. As the people who work the events & shows we thought maybe it would work, you know someone from outside the industry to some outside opinions. In my opinion yes the new director did cut some of the fat away the theater but is now shooting down ideas and opinions from people working industry. So all in all I wanted to know, how you get a executive director to listen to the underlings who have experience in making shows happen and putting people in chairs.

Dropbox Saved My Life Yesterday! Your thoughts?

Hey all,

I'm mostly a reader on this site and not much of a poster, but I had to share this. I do a lot of research on web/mobile apps and how they apply to our production process(I actually wrote my thesis on it). But yesterday my computer bricked. All of my production archives, budgets, photos, everything...gone. But I had most of the important stuff backed up on Dropbox, so it looks like things will be ok.

So this is just my small plug for Dropbox. STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING AND DOWNLOAD IT IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY!

Ok, you may now return to your regularly scheduled theatre programming :)

Anyone have any other apps they just can't live without?

Experience with LLC vs not-for-profit?

There is a new theatre group in my area that is looking for guidance and I'm at a bit of a loss regarding some particulars. The group has chosen to become a LLC instead of applying for 501(c)(3) status and has been absorbed by an umbrella corporation. I'm mostly interested in how this will effect the ability to receive donations and corporate sponsorships. Also, are there any others problems/concerns that might arise given their status?

I should note that no one is receiving pay and they are essentially running it as if it were a not-for-profit community theatre. The bulk of the money is coming from the owners' pockets.

Kennedy Center Arts In Crisis Tour

As part of their "Arts in Crisis" initiative at the Kennedy Center, they are offering management counseling to any non-profit who wants it. You can learn more about that program here.

An ancillary part of that program is the president of the Kennedy Center, Michael Kaiser, traveling to all 50 states and Puerto Rico to talk to people in each of the communities in a "town hall" type of meeting. On Friday, May 14 Kaiser will be speaking in Las Vegas, starting at 8:30 a.m. I will be be live-blogging the meeting here.
