For years before I saw Phantom of the Opera I had no idea what "Keep your hand at the level of your eye" was all about. Point being, the cast album made some things exciting and clear, and other things even more opaque. Same thing with the soundtrack to The Book of Mormon. I always lost track of who was singing what during the song "Turn It Off" -- which, when you see it, is incredibly clear. So, tell me: What confused you on a cast album but was totally crystal clear when you finally saw a show?

And I don't know how it happened, but now spoilers affect how I listen to an album, too. I used to devour whatever new soundtracks came out, whether I saw the show or not, because I simply wanted to know more about it -- now I'm hesitating listening to Hamilton because I don't want the album to spoil the show for me. It's a definite shift in my thinking, and I'm not sure I like it. I may have to force myself back to an attitude of "Who cares!" about spoilers. Have you listened to Hamilton yet? Do you still listen to recordings before you see a show, or do you wait so the experience isn't "spoiled"?

Finally, I was even thinking about the act of listening to a recording at all. When's the last time you listened to an album and gave it your full attention? Pressed play and didn't do anything else -- just listened to the music and the lyrics. Does anyone do that anymore? I can't remember the last time I gave an album my full attention from start to finish. Well -- who wants to try it? I'd love to host a listening event here on TheatreFace. We all log in at the same time, listen to a show tunes album, and talk about it in chat as it rolls through. Sound fun to anyone else? Anyone got an album they'd like to start with? Lemme know in the comments!
