There seems to be some question about whether stage management is more closely associated with technical theatre or with acting and directing. From my perspective it seems like stage management is a technical/organizational job more than an aesthetic one, although a stage manager definitely affects the aesthetics of production.

It depends on the show. They certainly manage the technical aspects, but there are productions where they run the rehearsals as the director.

Stage management is just that management. Supervise the show. Make sure shop deadlines are met, cues are on time, Union rules are met, supervise rehearsal personnel, (schedules, rehearsal reports, etc), run the show for the duration of the production as the director envisions it.

The stage manager holds a great deal of power in the structure of the theatre hierarchy. Think of them as the general manager for a particular production.
