I'm doing my first kids show, and I need advice! Calling all "lost techies", I need your help? We probably will not be getting rigging so any ideas are welcome. I need tinkerbell to be a light and a human at different times. Any ideas for tinkerbell illsusions, pulling hair, bell talk, moving toys or drawers, I would love to know how u do it. the draw gag is easy. Plunger solinoids for door locks will make the gag work great.

by making the plunger longer or shorter you can vary the distance of opening and closing.

as for the tinkerbell light, a strobe with a star gobo will create the effect and by varying the

rate of the strobe you will be able to do all sorts of things with that. As for making her appear,

a bring flash will distract the audience long enough to make her "appear from the light".

For Tink as light, we found that a green pointer laser worked quite well....we didn't try any softened focus or diffusion, but a touch could be worth a shot. Just avoid the temptation to move it TOO quickly across the stage and watch out for actors' eyes. A frosted glass vase, hit by the laser, will glow beautifully for when she's "captured". A similar effect can be had with a gap in the stump.... You can always add a green bulb on a dimmer to each of these effects if you want to add some "conversational" variations to the light level.

Drawers: build or modify a backless dresser and cut holes in the walls so that the drawers can be pushed out/pulled in manually (takes a fair bit of synchronization between the crew and tech people- recommend headsets, a monitor, and lots of rehearsal).

Tink light: shine a tight-focused PAR through a rotating prism Gobo. I saw it done with a cut glass ball mounted in front of a light and then ranged across the set by a followspot operator. When Tink goes into an object, have a light mounted inside the object shine out in the same color.

Bell: if the bell is mounted to a wall, run dental floss or black thread through a pinhole in the set and tape it just inside the bell with medical tape and have a stagehand pull it on cue. Don't attach the string to the clapper or when you pull it the sound will be flat. The clapper needs to be free to bang off the inside to get that pleasant echoing "ding" sound.

You can also run string to other items to make them move, jerk, fall over, etc.

Hair: many people overthink this effect by trying to rig some kind of effect but it's not necessary, especially when you have budgetary constraints. Teach the actor to mimic the effect of having the hair pulled- a backwards.sideways jerk of the head, a hand flying up to the "afflicted" area, and a nice loud "ouch!" will suffice.

I can't begin to thank everyone for your suggestions. Helps so much now I have questions about the house you build on stage for wendy. Any ideas the director is thinking of a playhouse but I Really like the idea of a leaf covered umbrella any thoughts? List of materials and pictures would be lovely. If any one has idea about building your own scrim I also have to do that. Thanks again.
