Putting a Face on Theatre

Once more into the darkroom my friends! Here’s three new photos vying for the title of Photo of the Week. Prize this week is a copy of three plays from Sheila Callaghan: “Lascivious Something; Roadkill Confidential; That Pretty Pretty, Or, the Rape Play” Without further ado, here’s the contestants!

Ragtime 1, added by Todd Koeppl
Right before I saw this play for the first time a friend of mine told me, “Don’t get attached to any of the characters.” The musical tackles a lot, and demands a lot from its cast and crew. I like that the color is lush in this picture, but the set is spare.

Hanging a light, added by Sara Elizabeth Gable
I choose a lot of on-stage photos for this series, for the simple fact that they’re generally more dramatic than the backstage ones. But this is such a fun pic, I had to include it. Sara’s smile as she tightens the lamp is infectious—it makes me want to grab my c-wrech and help with the load in. (Now let’s hope someone remembered to set the safety on the lamp on the right. ☺ )

Another great smile on this one, by the sitting actor. The pic’s a little dark, but I like the different areas of color, as well as the composition of the actors. It may be an imaginary meal, but it whetted my appetite.

Alright, now go vote!

The Ragtime photo is from the opening of the show and it was where the three "classes" of people in the show are introduced. We lit each group differently and the effect worked well. The show was produced by the Illinois State High School Theatre Festival as its All-State show during the Illinois State High School theatre Festival. The kids in the show - actors and techs - are from all over the State of Illinois and they meet for a total of about 10 or 12 rehearsals plus tech week and put this perfomance on for an audience of their peers. I was involved as the lighting designer, my dear friend John Mizanin from St. Charles East High School was he Scenic Designer and I had a very, very talented lighting crew, who also double-dutied as the projection crew. We used large-scale projection on the cyc as you can see in the other pictures to move the locations and story along - I wrote an article in another publication about the entire experience and if you are really interested, you can find a copy of the article on the Chicago Spotlight website, www.chicagospotlight.com. I have designed lighting, sound and/or scenery plus technical directed a total of eight of the All-State productions and while it is a very draining and intense experience, the end result is always spectacular, and the kids are always tremendous. For the techs out there - all color is by Apollo and we are also using some Apollo textured glass to soften the look of the group Stage Left -

Thanks, Todd!
The hanging a light photo was just me hanging lights during my lighting lab at Marietta College in Ohio where David Macuch is pretty much the total tech prof. who is kick ass! I believe that we were working on the light plot for Quilters: The Musical, where we had the audience on our mainstage in a thrust. And, I totally did not put the lamp on the right on the bar, but I did catch the safety after I finished with the one I was on! ;) Thanks for the photo pick! ~Sara :D
Thanks, Sara!
Congrats, Todd, for syncopating your way to Photo of the Week!
