Anyone have a bright idea to share on what food to use for the "knichi" we have to eat in "Barefoot in the Park"?? Should be small enough to pop into your mouth.

Something in a sushi roll? After all it's a fictitious food, so it can look like whatever you want it to look like
Thanks for the suggestion, Clinton. Last night we tried some small bread pieces from dough I made in the bread machine. Worked but tonight we're going to try whole water chestnuts. We'll see how that goes!
Depends how close your audience is going to be. You can take a loaf of Wonder Bread and squash it up into round dough balls if you're just looking for something to shove in your mouth. If it's to be eaten with a fork the old stage stand by is cold mashed potatoes. Yes, I know, sounds disgusting but they're actually a neutral taste and they don't mess with your salivary glands. You can add food coloring if you want it to look like something else. Main idea is not to gum up or dry out the mouths of the actors. I'd suggest making enough of whatever it is for just a few performances. Both the bread and the potatoes go gray after a while and no one's going to want to eat them.
This may be too late for your production, but after much tiral and error, we found granola balls. They "pop" easily and are easy to eat. Flavored too, so your actors dont dread rehearsing. You buy them as little popable balls. I think they are called "granola bites"
Thanks Michelle! We used water chestnuts cut in half. They worked well for us, no crumbs to choke on. I liked that fact that I had something to crunch!
We used red seedless grapes. Worked well.
