Putting a Face on Theatre

So, I'm dealing with the local ballet company this year and they are preforming La Fille Mal Gardee and near the end of Act 1 there is a large storm. I have been challenged with making it rain... without water... on a limited to non-existant budget... any and all ideas are welcome... ask if you need more info of the venue... I just need ideas... Please and thanks...

Great way to do rain, especially if your production can stand an effect that is more stylized than realistic: get some haze in the air, and put together a top light/hi-side lighting system with double gobo rotators. The right templates, at the right speed, with a cool, relatively unsaturated light, can create the impression of rain falling. (The trick is the haze in the air, which "catches" the shadows and makes it look like rain drops. Helps to have costumes/scenery/props for the light to shine on as well. It works really well with umbrellas!)

Good luck!
