elevator can be stationery onstage with a window and screen instead of glass. have a piece of opaque cardboard or wood with runners on the side. keep the wood blocking all backlight so the window appears dark. if the elevator is going down, move the wood downward to give the impression that the elevator is coming from above. reverse for the other direction. then open and close the door as needed.<br />

2nd suggestion...have sequenced lights on either or both sides of elevator. let them light sequentially to show the floor from which the elevator is coming and keep them on while to elevator is of the "stage" floor. then continue the concept I would be interested in seei…tag:www.theatreface.com,2009-03-24:2529492:Comment:224892009-03-24T20:07:24.430ZMichael Klipperthttp://www.theatreface.com/profile/MichaelKlippert
I would be interested in seeing your plans. I built one a few years ago with a fellow grad student at the time that worked well. I don't have any plans for it anymore though and may be in need of such an animal again soon.

Just do it with lighting and a scene change. It doesn't have to be a big deal. The audience can suspend their disbelief. Granted people have been forcing me to step away from minimalist theatre for years.

I'd be interested in your plans. Just built a lift for Grease for Teen Angel's descent and rise. Thought of the same idea using a winch and barn door hangers mounted vertically as guides. I'd like to compare designs.

I agree with Gary. Our High School production used shafts of lights and a smidge of creative design to generate the desired effect and it worked GREAT without having to pull your hair out thinking about a tricky production demand.

Last time I did this show we used a walk behind fork lift with a personnel basket on it. We had it all so it was just modifying it to look like an elevator.

I have built an elevator. Steel Frame. Automated with an engine / tool winch from Harbor freight. Went from stage floor to 10' off stage floor. Fairly simple and adaptable to different designs. Worked great. I have plans if you are interested in further details. Good Luck
