Just do it with lighting and a scene change. It doesn't have to be a big deal. The audience can suspend their disbelief. Granted people have been forcing me to step away from minimalist theatre for years.

elevator can be stationery onstage with a window and screen instead of glass. have a piece of opaque cardboard or wood with runners on the side. keep the wood blocking all backlight so the window appears dark. if the elevator is going down, move the wood downward to give the impression that the elevator is coming from above. reverse for the other direction. then open and close the door as needed.

2nd suggestion...have sequenced lights on either or both sides of elevator. let them light sequentially to show the floor from which the elevator is coming and keep them on while to elevator is of the "stage" floor. then continue the concept
