I highly recommend "Marry Me a Little" - created by Craig Lucas from cast-off Sondheim songs (although the title song did end up making it into the revival of Company).
One male, one female, flexible age (early 20's - late 30's easily), unit set, and the music is easily handled by either a single piano or a small combo. MTI has the rights.

There's one from the "classic" Broadway era: I Do, I Do. Robert Preston and Mary Martin are on the original-cast album. Source of the song "My Cup Runneth Over."

Marry Me a Little is a great 2-person show. You could also do the first act of The Apple Tree and cut the Snake's part. The original source (Mark Twain's the Diary of Adam and Eve) was a 2-character piece. Always Patsy is a 2-woman musical featuring the songs of Patsy Cline.

One of my favorites is "john and jen". Jen as a child raises her baby brother in act one until they have a huge fight and he leaves to fight in the Vietnam War. John dies, and Jen is crushed. End of Act I.
Act II begins with the birth of Jen's firstborn, who she names John after her late brother. The action continues as in Act I where Jen raises her new child, but she also remembers all the things she went through with her brother when they were young. She begins smothering her boy, making sure he is always safe in her care, but the growing man slowly tries to gain autonomy from his mother and be his own person. In the second to last scene, Jen finds herself at her brother's grave, and finally comes to terms with what happened twenty years ago, promising to move on. Finally, Jen and her son reconcile and she is able to let him go, knowing that they will both be alright.
Two actors are needed: Jen (toddler through middle age), and John (baby to late teens/early 20s). The same actor plays both Johns.
The music is beautiful and the story is fantastic. I highly recommend it!
