You could ask over at the sound designer's group, but my initial thought is that if it's a "classical" Greek drama or tragedy the time period takes it out of the realm of what we think of as classical music, so you could get away with almost anything. If you don't mind trying to get permission I would take a look at some more contemporary treatments of classical music, such as Emerson, Lake and Palmer. You can find many long instrumental passages that are very dramatic. Or someone like Mike Oldfield who did a lot of repetition of themes that work very well for underscoring.

Keep in mind that if you're using recorded music, even if the music itself is in the public domain, the recording is not and you'll need permission.

Does anyone have some classical music ideas for Greek drama?

One book that helps me is Creating Life On Stage by Marshall W. Mason.

David, lots of theatres will ask that you work with them in some other capacity before they'll trust you with a show - often working as an assistant director or stage manager will get your foot in the door and you can get to know how a theatre works and they can get to know you.

Question for all of you 'official' directors - I'm looking to break into directing into a larger theatre, but 'need more experiance'. I can't get more experiance unless I get a job... How do I do it? Thoughts?

How large of a cast are you looking for? Set? What strengths do you have as a department? I've only got 8 years under my belt working with HS, but I'll offer some thoughts for whatever they're worth...

I am a HS theatre director and competition season will be starting again soon. Does anyone have a brilliant idea for a play for 14-18 year olds with a lot of heart and substance? I directed A Midsummer Night's Dream last year and The Actor's Nightmare the year before. Thank you SO much!!!

I've got a new adapation of Around the World in 80 Days, too. It's not published yet, although Rover Dramawerks gave it a world premiere in March 2009. Most of the actors in it WERE 40+ and it could be done with as few as 10 actors and as many as 60.

congrats! Carol! Any other adaptations we should know about. I'm particulary interested in plays suited for actors 40+
