I would add to Gerard that most of the time the majority of the units will be used for basic wash lighting so a fixed unit is all you need for them. Adding a small quantity of zoom's for special's would round out the package. But spend your money first on the fixed then add the zoom's.

If your house bar provides a throw distance that would yield a good, usable beam size on stage, then I would go with the fixed focal lenses. simpler to use/focus, maintain, etc. You could also get a few zooms for those times when a fixed lens just won't get the job done. And you can get more units for the same budget if you go with the fixed lenses.

I'm looking to add new Source 4 Jr.'s to my house bar. Should I get the zooms or instruments with a set focal angle?

John -
Joel from Rosco here.
The Rosco X24 creates a great Aurora Borealis Effect by replacing one of its standard water effect discs with a Rosco Cyan Wave Colorwave gobo (X-size). IMHO the Northern Lights are more green than Cyan, so I also add a piece of Permacolor 1086 Industrial Green to the fixture to green it up a bit. I know there are X24's for rent in various places around the country. Contact me off list - joel@rosco.com - and we can talk about it more.

A piece of lightweight cloth, chiffon or similar, hung with fullness behind a black scrim, side and/or uplights in northern light colors on a slow chase, with a fan or tag lines to give some movement to the fabric 'Aurora'

Sounds like you are involved in a One Act Festival. Prepanel Xmas twinkle lights pinned is a scrim or dark, thin scarf material. Black out random bulbs and hang with safety pins? Make on large one or several small 'panels' that will plug together.

I need to create the "northern lights". Ideas?

I need to create stars that twinkle for a play and the show needs to travel and tech in 90 minutes and setup in 10 minutes. Ideas?

Bryan, it is impossible to change over a magnetic ballast Mac 2K profile, but you can get a transformer made that will step up the voltage to 220VAC. That is what we did. It is not cheap, around $400 if I remember right, but you then have a usable fixture. The transformer will be heavy and will require some creative rigging if you are going to hang it.

Jason, what followspot are you using now? How far is the spot from the stage? How much do you expect to spend?
