Not sure the best route to take with this, but I'll try the comment wall and the Discussion forum. Activity seems a little... stagnant right now.
Would you be so kinda as to please take 10 minutes to complete a survey on Leadership in the Arts? My fellow Theatre Management MFA students and I are conducting research on trends in successful and unsuccessful Arts Leadership.

The stories you may chose to tell need not be grand in scope, but could be about a subscription campaign you were a part of, a board development initiative at a company you worked with, or even a story about a director of a production that was particularly successful or unsuccessful. If you have a story about a more significant issue, we'd love to hear about that too.

Your participation will be fantastically helpful for us to draw some real conclusions about what leadership qualities may have significant impact on the ultimate success or failure of a project. Some of those surveyed already have expressed unease about describing arts leaders as failures. Others are uncomfortable naming names or being identified themselves. Rest assured that no names will be used in any of our research documents unless explicit permission is allowed, and on the chance that we should publish, we will refer back to question three, which asks for permission to use the names provided. If "failure" rubs you the wrong way, please consider the frame to be "unsuccessful," or simply pass that question up.

Feel free to deny permission for us to use your name, or those of the leaders you identify, but please answer the other questions if you would be so kind.
Thank you for your help! The link to the survey is below. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hello all! I have a BA and MA in Performance Studies and I'm looking at applying to an MFA in Arts Leadership to start next fall...any personal recommendations on great schools? I found the AAAE website(http://www.artsadministration.org/) extremely helpful, and I am compiling my list of potential schools from there. Any words of help "from experience" would be appreciated! Thanks!

At our community theatre, ShenanArts, we typically charge $16 Reserved, $12 General Admission (adults) and $8 Students (this includes college students). Our theatre seats 240. It absolutely helps with ticket sales. In fact we have students return mulitple times to see a show because the price is reasonable...cheaper than a movie.

Rover Dramawerks offers a $2 discount for students and seniors, and for some family-friendly shows that we really want to drag the whole family to, we offer $10 tickets for kids, especially for matinees. Our regular prices are $15 on Thursdays and matinees and $18 on Fridays and Saturdays, so that's a nice discount and really helps attendance.

How many of you other community theatre's offer youth discounts for either all shows or select shows? And if you do offer youth discounts, can you give me an idea how it's working for you? I want to begin such a discount but our board is resistant. Any input is welcome!

I too am new to this group and have to agree with Zac. It is a great book and there are several out there. Another one is "Don't just applaud, throw money."

To answer your question Zac, I would first have to ask you who are your demographic? Once you know who your patrons are then you can start reaching out to them by giving them what they want.

Thanks I will take a look at it.

Hi Medley,
For a good overview of the business, I suggest How to Run a Theater by Jim Volz. Also, do a great deal of friend-raising within the community. Build strong relationships with theatres, individual artists, audiences and corporate presence in your community.

Though young I incorporated my own community theatre: Front & Center Theatre, Inc.
Any suggestions, I know I could use a lot. I'm running the theatre myself with a board of five including myself (my family and two others).

Hi Everyone.

My name is Zac - I am new to the site. Currently finishing my BFA in Stage Management at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, I will be beginning a masters in nonprofit management in August. Over the summer, I will be working with the local umbrella arts organization in government affairs and grants administration. In time, I'd like to be the executive director of a regional theatre company, working my way up through development.

I want to ask if anyone has tips or words of wisdom for someone new to the industry. I have already become involved in the local young non-profits group and am focusing on networking with other arts leaders and philanthropists in town. What are some of the things you did right when you were beginning, or wish you'd done differently?
