I checked the IATSE online site and found a local! I am so surprised -- we are just an area of 200,000 with only 2 major venues and one of these is connected to a college. Thanks for the info.

Tracy, I would see what the union IATSE rate is in your area. Then go from there. Cost of living is different everywhere so it all depends. I pay overhire workers anywhere from $22 - $10 an hour, depending on their skill.

I am from a community theatre in Midland, Texas. Every once in awhile we get a touring company thru the area needing labor for the Load In, etc and I am contacted by the venue. All of my folks have day jobs (volunteers are our life blood) and I am concerned that when they sign up they are getting a fair rate. Do y'all have a scale for "unskilled" labor?

I would have to say that the hardest part of the job is finding the labor that is needed to do the productions.

Bill,

According to my contact at the League of Chicago Theatres, there are 190ish members of that organization and only about 35 of those are AEA. He thinks that there are another 35-50 producing organizations in the area that are not a member of the league and only a few of those are AEA. So that's probably only 15-20% AEA... Wow, maybe I don't feel so bad about my job now, since we are in that small percentage.

Hi Bill,
If your theatre is a member of TCG (Theatre Communications Group) there is a document that lists the national averages for technical personnel. I moved from St. Louis to Chicago recently and was shocked at how much more the going rate was here. feel free to email we, and I'll share what I know about the rates in these two cities. jim@nexttheatre.org.

Hi from Spain, as freelance PM and Technical Director, Bill is hard to rate Technicians, normally you have to do it as a group, and the Unions have their rates, over paid, for 95% of them.
Is hard issue.

Greetings from NC! What a great site this is. One of my concerns as PM is trying to have competitive salaries; offering technicians what they are worth. It's hard to compare since theatres are "guarded" with that kind of info. Is there a magic site where one can see what the "going rate" is for technicians?
