David McCall commented on Rich Dionne's blog post 'Designer or Technician? Or Both?'
That is the conventional wisdom and I agree with it for the most part. A good shop with good crafts people should be able to create some semblance of any design that can be conceived by a designer. If there are specific problems with the design lik…

Like I said in the beginning, I agree with you and was just playing devil's advocate. The ability to communicate and come up with alternatives is very important. A lack of shop skills will make compromise difficult at best.

I pretty much agree with what has been said, but let me play devil's advocate for a moment. A designer with a lot of shop experience will likely design a that can readily be done, and he/she can tell the shop how he/she wants it to be done out of 4x…

You could apprentice at a summer stock or regional theater, but you may be too late for this year. Those inquires should go out in January, but you might get lucky.

I just noticed that the PCstage web site is now closed. Does anyone know anything about this? I own and love PCstage and have recommending it to anyone that will listen. If Michael has gone out of business, then I should stop pushing it. No?

From what I can figure this is a programmable control surface to be used with the "Enlighten" DMX Lighting control software (free demo available http://www.enlightenpro.com/ ). If the software is purchased alone it comes with a DMX interface. You mi…

The software is downloaded from the Presonus site and is free. The app for the iPad is available at the apple app store and is also free. It include a demo mode that you can fiddle with without owning a Presonus Studio Live. It does run on a PC, but…

All right, nobody laugh. We have been using a Presonus 16-4-2 for the last couple of productions and I've fallen in love. You can buy a 24 track version, or a 2 16 track versions and link them together to get 32 channels. By itself it doesn't seem…

David McCall replied to Brian Carter's discussion 'Consoles' in the group Lighting
I'm pretty cheap. "The PCstage" software is really quite capable and a far better tool than the 144 channel Leviton that came with our venue. I find that students are more comfortable with it as well. We are currently using PCstage upstream of the L…

Ask the folks that live along the Mississippi river about tightly controlled water. It's kind of an oxymoron isn't it? You can catch the water in a reservoir beneath a built up stage, but don't count on a plastic membrane preventing leakage. Water…

David McCall commented on Richelle Thompson's blog post 'Pretending to be a Props Artisan...And Climate and Gear'
Have you considered mummifying props and equipment in that "saran wrap" like plastic that manufacturers use to hold lot pallets of boxes together? It might do pretty well at keeping the moisture away. I did grow up in the south so I do know what you…

David McCall replied to Candyce Iseminger's discussion 'Assisting with Lighting Plots: Short Fixtures'
It is best to develop the attitude that you can light anything with anything. If they have no budget to buy/lease the lights you feel you need, then all you can do is do the best you can with what they have available. You can then suggest a plan to…

Hmm, I wonder what happened there. I do remember writing something. It may have been my surprise that the system needed to be concerned with in vs out. It would seem that the design could be simple enough to that the connections would just pass thro…

I could see this to be a very valuable device, especially for a touring show. I have 2 very small issues though. CAT-5 or CAT-6 cable or even 4 wire phone cable is much more available than 6 wire phone cable. I can see that using an odd cable migh…

I love the air horn idea :-) One director I work with scatters the kids around the auditorium and has them do their lines from there. It really gives the kids an idea of what they sound like to the audience. Wireless mikes can help, and many peo…

Gwydion I was in a really bad mood when I posted that, but there is still some truth in it. I come from a time when you were expected to achieve excellence, and then that excellence might get rewarded if you are really lucky. Now kids get a bronze a…

I applaud a job well done. If it wasn't well done, it is likely that I won't still be there for bows.

Thank you very much for responding to my panic. I think you are absolutely right. I have finally heard from the venue host and feel a bit better. Now do you know of any high school student who wouldn't mind transferring to BHS to run this light and sound for me. My kids have never done it before:{

Picture taken early 2006. It's a long story. The old (Prehistoric?) Asolo was shut down and neglected after the company moved across the street, very sad to see. They used it for occasional events but there was a medical emergency on the third tier during an event and evacuating the patient was so difficult it was declared unfit for public occupancy. After FSU took over the museum I'm told there was a discussion to tear down the building and sell the pieces back to the town of Asolo Italy or the highest bidder but the then head of the University saw it, loved it and wanted it saved. There were three entities involved: FSU/Ringling Museums, Asolo Theatre Company and FSU Acting Conservatory. Over alcoholic beverages I will tell you what they each told me about the others but basically they didn't communicate well and I was hired as the on site theatrical expert. For whatever reasons the Museum built the venue it felt suited its' needs best with no interest in accommodating the theatre company using it as a presentation space. So - very little wing space, no fly system - just catwalks overhead. No pit, not much room for FOH lighting, no easy access to the Orchestra seating but: Great Acoustics and a masterful job of restoration by the Museum Conservators. The place looks great. I was the LD from 1972 `til we moved out in the late 80's. The lighting portholes were long gone when I arrived. Some pretty good coves for FOH (tho you had to crawl to change gel & focus) and I managed to sneak some small units in the 3rd Tier Box Booms for Apron sidelite.
