Eric Hart replied to Jane Brandt's discussion making realistic jello/jelly
"Jane - depending on your budget, a soft silicone rubber may work. Smooth-on's Eco-Flex or Dragon Skin are both translucent silicone rubbers that can be tinted and cast in a mold."

Eric Hart replied to Josh Siegel's discussion Edible Newspaper
"We've used the edible rice paper before (also called edible wafer paper) for pieces of paper that needed to be eaten. I do not know how thin you can get it since the stuff we used was a bit stiff and not like newsprint, but it's probably…"

Eric Hart commented on Rich Dionne's blog post How do you teach drafting?
"There was a panel on this very subject at this year's USITT, with Patricia Woodbridge. They were overwhelmingly coming from the perspective that you need learn hand drafting because that teaches you how to communicate through drafting, as…"

Eric Hart commented on Rich Dionne's blog post Fire Safety and the Iroquois Theatre Fire
"Thanks, Rich. There's a lot which we take for granted in theatres. If production managers stick to their guns and make sure fire regulations are followed, one day those will be taken for granted as well. The next generation of directors and…"

Eric Hart commented on Rich Dionne's blog post Fire Safety and the Iroquois Theatre Fire
"What a coincidence; I just wrote a bit about the Iroquois Theatre Fire last week: http://www.props.eric-hart.com/safety/public-theater-fire-drill/ There's a lot of good information about it, as well as other theatre fires, and theatre fire…"

Eric Hart commented on Rich Dionne's blog post Calendars and Gantt Charts
"I have a question (which you may actually be answering in an upcoming column). Can these planning tools be used for processes in which all the steps can not be known? Say you work at a theatre where designers and directors are given a lot of freedom…"

Eric Hart replied to Jeremy Jenkins's discussion What is the right Glue? (Plotter paper to Lauan)
"I love using 3M Super Spray 77 for attaching paper to any kind of wood products. It does sound like that may get expensive for the size of flats you are making though, not to mention the large area you would fill with fumes. I would test using…"

Eric Hart replied to Danielle M. B. Curtis's discussion Deer Butt for A Lie of the Mind
"My wife made one back in 2003. I wrote about it on my blog: http://www.props.eric-hart.com/how-to/how-to-make-a-deer-butt/ It's currently at Ohio University. Tom Fiocchi, the prop master, rents it out quite a bit. Just last year, he rented…"

Eric Hart replied to Julia Garlotte's discussion The onstage cell phone call...
"Even a pay-as-you-go phone will use a number recycled from a previous user - there is no way to ensure you will not get a random phone call during a show. Also, there can be a delay between when you call the number to when the phone rings, which…"

Eric Hart replied to Steven's discussion Using Valuable Antiques as Props? in the group Scenery and Props
"I think it's similar to the process you use for determining whether to keep any prop: do you think you will need it again? Can you afford to buy, rent or build a new one if you do get rid of it? Because these are real antiques, you can actually…"

Eric Hart replied to Andrew Hungerford's discussion Paper as a scenic element in the group Scenery and Props

Eric Hart replied to Kathie Comella's discussion Breakaway bottles in the group Scenery and Props

Portfolios for Prop Artisans

I just finished a 2 part article on putting together a portfolio for props artisans. I'd love to get feedback on it if you are an artisan yourself, or if you have advice from a similar field, such as costume crafts, puppetry, scenic art, et al. I would especially love to hear any thoughts or additions if you have ever had to review or critique portfolios from artisans. You can leave comments here, or… Continue

Eric - Welcome to it! So glad you signed up. Like I said, we're in the late beta right now, so we don't have a ton of users online, but we're here. Lemme know if you'd like to see anything here, and what discussions it might be nice to start/info to get out there for props people. Also, you weren't a member yesterday, so I didn't send you this e-mail-- but I asked who in theatre you would want to talk to. I'm trying to get a live weekly chat sessino going where users can ask questions of theatre professionals they admire -- who would you like to see on TheatreFace? -Jacob
