Small, intimate, simple and creative sets...by intimate, I mean almost certainly smaller houses. Vagina Monologues, The Actor's Nightmare and When Shakespeare's Ladies Meet were all within that category for me. Lynna

I am so discouraged...

Unable to cast our spring musical...a musical I was REALLY excited to be doing. Now we are trying to regroup and refocus. I am going to direct something, don't know what...majority want murder mystery, but casting remains difficult (I HATE calendering spring shows as folks tend to be overbooked in the spring). I want it to be easier. When we hold auditions, I want enough turnout that I am able to cast...don't want to have to advertise and beg and cajole to fill out the cast. I want people to wan… Continue

Community theater

I have been active in community theater for most of my life, starting in SoCal in junior high a gazillion years ago, working my way across country to my current Massachusetts community theater home. I am always looking for ideas and inspiration. Playreading, membership, directing, acting, the day to day life of a community theater board member...hoping to hear from others.

How do you craft a three show/event season in a small town where straight shows bring in 50ish per night, shows with kids b… Continue

We are a midsized theater with lots of competition in the area. We are the only dinner theater in the area although some of the others have a dinner with their opening shows. We have an old theater that we put about $2 million into renovations. It seats 120 for dinner and another 130 seats available in the balcony for those not wanting the meal. Casting men can be a pain here as well, you just don't know from show to show. I directed "A Few Good Men" three years ago with a cast of 18 men and one woman. I had 19 men show for the audition and 4 women. This year I did Biloxi Blues needing 7 men and had 5 audition. I made several phone calls and e-mails to fill out my cast.

I was reading your blog about doing straight shows versus musicals. We have a simular problem here. We do six main stage shows a year two of which are musicals. Our summer musical we try to do a blockbuster title. This last season it was "My Fair Lady", this season "The Music Man". Then something less known for the winter musical. Most of our straight shows average 90-100 but the musicals will have 150-250 depending on the night of the week. Biloxi Blues only averaged 55 a night but "To kill a mocking bird" was over 100 per night. Both known plays but I'd say selection is everything.

I have directed myself in minor roles several times. This will be my first lead and director in the same show. I see you lived in Riverside, CA for a while. I was raised not far from there myself. I went to school in City of Industy, Ca at Workman H.S. I graduated in "73"
