- For the moment, I'm very happy where I am. I just wish the Arts program got as much support as the Sports program.
- What's your best advice to someone wanting to be in the theatre?
- Have a very thick skin. It's only theatre until it offends someone; then, it's ART.

- Sorry I never got back to you -- your comment about having to spend your budget -- you might want to check into that. Our business manager told us that with activity accounts for drama programs the money can roll over since not all the students who benefit or who helped raise the money graduate each year. So there is a loophole. Right now I am just starting up Alice in Wonderland -- not the musical version -- and it will be tough but it pulled in many new faces so my program is going to grow. - New Business manager in our school district has just put the cuffs on everyone who has an activity account. Somehow I have to first have my students who are part of the Drama Club approve what and how we spend the money, then I have to put in the purchase order request and hope my principal approves it, then I can go get the stuff and then I have to have an invoice from the store -- which makes it difficult with food props or buying things from the Goodwill where they don't hold items. I used to be able to scout for things, and when something came I up, I used to be able to buy it and then get reimbursed. No more. My budget is pretty good since I did Wizard of Oz two years ago and Beauty and the Beast last year. What I make on my musicals is what I can spend. Just did Blithe Spirit and barely broke even. But it was a good show, except not a very big audience. Saturday night there was a big local college football game which killed my audience.
I felt bad for the kids. But we had a great set and the crew had fun executing the special effects.
I am planning on probably retiring next year even though I am going to take a big hit on my pension. But I am getting tired of fighting the battles.
Stay in touch. If you ever want to relocate to Western PA this job actually has its merits. We do have a great teaching theatre with a state of the art lighting system which I fought hard for, and a new scene shop. I am terrified that when I go they won't hire someone who has the necessary experience to run the kind of program we offer.

- I teach Drama at Indiana High School, Indiana, PA. I wish I had funding like the athletic dept -- all my funding comes from my box office. Does your district provide you with a budget or are you in the same situation as I am? Also, are you a dept of one? Just curious.
