Jacob Coakley Woo-Hoo!

Printing out a copy of the synopsis of my cheese play. It's nowhere near finished, but I've been working on this synopsis every spare minute for the past month, so it feels good to have this step finished! Continue

Jacob Coakley Some Recent Theatre News

As I have said in other forms, I am a theatre news junkie. Here's some recent stories that stood out for me. First, the distressing news. A couple more items about theatres in peril in this turbulent economic times. The Baltimore Sun has the news about the Baltimore Theatre Project being "on the brink here: … Continue

Howard Kaufman The DTV Transition Part II - White Space Devices (now known as TVBD's)

In my last post I explained half of what is happening in the new transition to Digital Television and the effect on frequencies above 698MHz (the 700 MHz band) - specifically that TV channels 52-69 are going to have new uses and will no longer be available for wireless mics. Now here is the other half of the discussion which has to do with the spectrum below 698MHz, specifically channels 14-51. A few years ago the FCC put out a notice of proposed rule-making in which a new class of unlicensed… Continue

Jeffrey E. Salzberg Arts Funding, Redux

While blogging on the future of classical music, Greg Sandow has said: The economic argument for giving stimulus money to the arts is shallow, and easy for non-arts organizations to trump. It's hard to argue for money for the arts when money for crucial social programs -- public health, for instance -- is lacking. It's hard, politically, to give stimulus money for arts organizations like the Metropolitan Opera,… Continue

Laura Melchiorre Daily News

Hi. This is my first post on here. Just a little bit about myself. I am currently auditioning at colleges to get in for musical theater. I am so glad that's what I decided to major in. I can't really think of anything I would want to do with my life, or anything else that I'm good at. haha. I have one more audition and then I'm finally DONE. I just have to wait to see where I got accepted which is going to be the worst part... I have auditioned at Ithaca, Baldwin-Wallace, Marymount Manhattan,… Continue

Melody Coraline 3D

Just got in after watching a late show of Coraline. The stop motion is really stunning - probably the best I've ever seen. Story completely aside, this is a beautiful movie. Makes me look forward to Tribeca this year if I'm going to be in town for it. Maybe not depending on when the dates fall. Continue

Jeffrey E. Salzberg Fanfare for the Common Man

I had an epiphany some time ago. I listened to Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man. I’d heard it before, of course – it’s long been one of my favorite pieces of American music, actually – but this time I really listened to it. And, for the first time, I understood it. It helps to know the background. In 1942, the Cincinnati Orchestra invited 18 composers to submit new pieces expressing their feelings about America. At the time, Nazi Germany had conquered most of Europe. Much of… Continue

Beth Guido Anything Goes!

Well, it's been an exciting (and exhausting) month and a half, but opening night of Anything Goes is almost here :) We are all chugging throat coat tea and ricola and praying no more of us get sick. I had a bit of a relapse of the stomach flu last night but with lots of rest this weekend I should be better going into tech week *crosses fingers, toes, arms and whatever else I can find*) We are performing in Ralston Hall's beautiful ballroom, which lends itself quite well to the 30's era. The… Continue

David Rheins Another Social Network!

We could ask ourselves why do we need another social network? Many of us already have Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, Orkut, Friendster, LinkedIn...or other social pages or blogs. How will a network of professional performers and theatrical types help us? I'm hopeful we can build our network to help the freelance lifestyle. Living from gig to gig, feast to famine, makes budgeting and long-term investment difficult, not to mention the headaches of tracking finances and taxes. I'm hoping that… Continue

Stacy Hennon Used lights, sound sets or anything!

A friend and I are taking over a youth drama program in Los Angeles (actually El Segundo), and I am the technical director. The program does not have much in the way of any tech and I was wondering if anyone has anything they are donating or selling for fairly cheap? I would be willling to drive a little way to pick it up. Anything you have that might work, please respond. Thanks! Stacy Hennon Continue

William Brewer Cuts affecting educational theatreq

I'm the chairman of a fine arts department at a community college. I just cut our budget 4+% for this year with an anticipated 10% cut coming for next fiscal year. I'm wondering how other departments are being affected: how will you cope? Are you going to consider raising ticket prices? Doing any outside fundraising, etc.? My problem is my department covers 5 disciplines--music, art, theatre, broadcasting, and philosophy/religion (don't ask!). Any ideas??? Continue

Twig On

My friends and I occasionally watch cheesy horror movies, so this blog will have references to the ridiculous things that we witness. For instance, we watched this one called Student Bodies that featured a tall lanky looking man aptly named The Stick. No, that wasn’t his character name that was his real name. We were fascinated by his performance: #1 because it was terribly bad #2 because he was triple jointed in every extremity of his body, and he could bend in ways that put Gumby to shame.… Continue

Howard Kaufman Wireless Mics in the new DTV age - Part I

From my vantage point as the Technical Representative of a major Wireless Mic manufacturer I have seen a tremendous amount of confusion about what is happening to the RF spectrum due to the DTV transition currently taking place. This spectrum, which up to now consisted of TV channels 2 - 69, was supposed to shrink on Feb. 17th to encompass only channels 2-51. In other words, we are losing channels 52-69. At the same time all analog TV broadcasting will cease, leaving behind only DTV… Continue
