I went to San Francisco this past weekend to visit friends and relatives (my wife is from there, her parents live and work there), and in addition to picking up some lovely cheese I managed to:
1 - See
Wicked for the first time
2 - Drop completely out of the loop when it comes to following theatre news. So, here's some info on both.
First Off, Some Interesting News Links

Oh boy, now I know for sure that I'm off my meds. I've had an idea of staging my own show at a community theater nearby. Am thinking in terms of Charles Mee's
Wintertime, or that fun opera version of 999999999 [sorry, that was my tabby Don Juan]
The Bald Soprano that I was in a few years ago. Or, if I'm really demented, I'll write my own show.
A little history: Last year, I fell into the clutches of the most disorganized, most demented company I've ever encountered, either as a…

...but I went to an audition for
Oklahoma today. I shouldn't try to do a dance-heavy show. I've had some dance training, but you wouldn't know it. Takes me
weeks to learn combinations, and I'm not patient with myself. Wrenching my ankle during one dance audition years ago didn't help. The injury healed long ago, but I'm still nervous about jumps and twirls.
Maybe I could take a class, and maybe I could find one that wasn't 15 Mary Lou Rettons and me, but that takes $ that I don't…

I just caught an excellent production of Terrence McNally's
Lips Together, Teeth Apart in Palo Alto, presented by Theatre Q at Dragon Productions. This was the first time I'd seen it since catching the Philadelphia Theatre Company production in 1992. Still hits hard, especially in a small space, and the cast is first rate.
It runs one more weekend:

Me, I'm still striking out right and left with auditions. Got two coming up. Here's…

I am looking for companies that sell new and used stage drapery. I have a few companies, but wanted to get the word out to anyone reading that is in the business and wants to call me also. I am searching for a black sharks tooth scrim approximate size of 50' wide x 30' tall. I am also looking for a main travel curtain in red. My proscenium is 45 feet wide by 25 feet high, so I am seeking a significant size curtain. Please contact me at 914-934-9362 Jim

My middle daughter Gwen, who is 14 years old, loves the Barbie movies. I have been watching them with her, I have to admit that I have been enjoying myself immensely. The music is Broadway sounding. The voice over work is done by well know actors and actresses. The morals are told in very modern ways. They almost remind me of fun and modern morality plays.

Here we are at day 3 of the 2009 TCG conference in Baltimore. I'm keeping notes to give some nice end-of the weekend, looking back type entries, but here's what my day has been about today.
Just left part 1 of the "New Plays Today: Two Studies" about the current culture of American playwrights/new plays (Theatre Development Fund's New Plays and Playwrights Project, led by Todd London) and the positives and negatives of new play development in 14 US communities ("The Gates of Opportunity" by…

Hey guys!
Huge apologies for the lack of updates. We've had some wireless access issues, but should be good from here on out. Tonight, I'll get some comprehensive recaps on yesterday's start and what's going on today. For those who like their blogging in micro-size, follow our twitter feed @stagedirections.
Here's the question for today: Forget about online forums and tweets and Myspace: What are the fundamentals to engaging audiences? Do we need to re-invent how we approach producing, or…

While at Wal-Mart one day. A young African man was checking my items and we got to talking. I had my youngest daughter with me, and commented on how helpful and well behaved she was. He ask about how old she. I told him that she had just turned 12 and that Ana, my daughter, went to a Christian school. He asked about if they taught Darwinism. I explained they taught both Creationism and Darwinism, and gave him other reason why she goes to a Christian school. He explain that in his country they…
