A Query about Query Letters

I’m pretty sure I'm done writing query letters to theaters.

I haven’t actually written one in quite some time. Like most playwrights, I think, I started out gung ho, reading my Dramatists Sourcebook and marking it up rather heavily with annotations about which theaters might be interested in which of my plays, preparing carefully-assembled packets, fretting over my synopses, addressing carefully-packaged envelopes. I waited and waited and waited for responses, which in many cases…

PQ...Fait Accompli!

Dobrý den from Prague! I write again after busy days exploring the Prague Quadrennial and the Czech capital itself. Prague is a city with a rich theatrical tradition and the city continues to value its theatre today. We were pleasantly surprised to find a quality company not far from our hotel and, in fact, our “daily commute” takes us from our local, humble “Divadlo Na Fidlovačce” (http://www.fidlovacka.cz/) to the “Národní Divadlo,” the grand…

At Work Therapy

One of my favorite past times in college was when stress was high and I found myself facing a long week or night ahead - especially around mid terms or finals - was to take a mid-work break. Several times during an all-night-er, I'd head to the grocery store to pick up a six pack or 2-liter of something strongly caffeinated, a treat from the bakery isle, some beef jerky, and finally a coloring book, then go home and break out the 54 pack of crayolas.

Why coloring worked to…

Joseph Smith, American Pervert (A One-Act Play)

Joseph Smith, American Pervert

Setting: Joseph Smith’s house, the kitchen.

At rise: SARAH, HANNAH, and LISA are sitting at the kitchen table. They are dressed modestly in long skirts and long-sleeved, high-necked blouses, but Sarah is showing a hint of ankle and has left the top button of her blouse undone.

SARAH

I can’t believe you dragged me here…like I have nothing better to do on a…

Post Vacation Blues

I went back to work yesterday, after being on vacation for 12 days. After nearly two weeks where my only theatre encounters were seeing a wonderful production and walking or driving past Yale Rep every day or so, it is at once a wonderful and awful experience.

It's been a long time since I went on a vacation and really checked my "normal" life at the airport's boarding gate while I was gone. For the 12 days I was in New England, I hardly thought about Montgomery at all, aside…

Catwalk or 'Walk the Plank'?

In the far reaches of many theatres there are elevated walkways that tie parts of the theatre plant together. Although there are building code standards and safety standards written to define how these are to be constructed, there are many places where they do not meet these standards. This occurs for two basic reasons:

  • The designer…

Theatre Meets Cthulu

[Apologies for the tardiness of this post! A combination of incorrectly remembered flight times, scheduling travel with a friend who was flying to an end destination the other side of the country of my own, and just plain poor planning had left me without internet and access to my hard drive until now. Gee, I really should apply that "audition tips" post more to my life in…

A Few thoughts on Being an Independent Playwright

How does a playwright promote and/or market themselves? Specifically, an independent playwright -that is without a major publishing company representing them? This topic came up a few weeks ago on a writer discussion board and it lead me to consider my own history, philosophy and methods of self promotion. How did I do it?

History

Back in 2000 I got the idea to offer the murder mystery comedies I had penned for a local group to the world at large. Now here is… Continue

St. Louis Shakespeare Festival does a great job with Taming of the Shrew

Many accolades to the St. Louis Shakespeare festival for their production of Taming of the Shrew. Easily the most enjoyable and fun production of Shrew that I have ever seen and easily among the top five best Shakespeare productions I have ever seen. They set it in the 1950s with appropriately fun set and costumes. Put it in a back yard with a pool and a barbecue. Even drove a 1950 something Cadillac onto the set. They included the opening "induction" scene which I had never…

Geeking Out

If you know me at all beyond this blog, you know I’m a bit of a geek. Well, more than a bit. I’m fascinated by math and science. I can listen to Carl Sagan talk about the Cosmos for hours. I read science fiction the way some people drink coffee, and I’ve seen just about every comic book movie—at least twice.

More than that, I’m a proud Star Wars geek. I know Han shot first; I know that Obi Wan Kenobi uses a Soresu lightsaber dueling style; I know the Millennium Falcon made…

Rosco's 'Share The Work — And Get The Swag' Promo

Good stage lighting work should be shared ... especially if you get some great swag in return!

Did you ever go to a performance and think to yourself “what a great lighting effect – I wish I knew how the designer did it. What colors were used? Which gobos? What does a director ask of the designer to get an effect like that?"

Of course you did, it happens to me all the time. It’s why we think sharing those ideas with the… Continue

“Speak up – He’s a foreigner and can’t hear English too good!”

Does your venue ever host events with ‘out of towners’? I mean people from waaaay out of town – like another country. We live in a multicultural society, and we must be tolerant and of other’s inability to clearly understand our language (both written and spoken), and we must be willing to make the extra effort to initiate communications. We can’t reasonably expect everyone to understand our signage, lingo, or…

Your Personal Arts Budget

Have you ever stopped to think about how much you spend every year on the arts?

The average American spends more on entertainment than on gas, furniture, or education. In an interview with Mary Hart on NPR the other day, the former Entertainment Tonight host put the number at $3,000, and that got me to thinking: what’s my own annual…

Broad Expectations - BOM Part 2

When I entered the packed Eugene O'Neil theatre on Friday afternoon, contrary to my earlier goal of watching as a patron, I was almost determined to be critical of The Book of Mormon. Somewhere on the plane to Hartford, the car ride to New Haven, or the train ride to NYC, I'd gotten theatre "tough." I hadn't… Continue

Vlogging from the Last Frontier Theater Conference!

Hey guys! A special treat this week (and for the next few weeks hopefully): I'll be video blogging (or "vlogging", for the internet lingo folks :P)! Yes, I'm finally sharing my face here at TheatreFace. (Though it's been fun hiding behind my cartoon avatar... Man, I really need to update that guy, I've clearly gotten a haircut since drawing him! :P)

2011 Tonys!

Here's the 2011 Tony Awards Open Thread. What did you think of the broadcast? What did you think of the winners? Who got robbed? Which musical should just close up shop after their number on the show? What surprised you the most? I've included links to all the videos of the broadcast I could find on YouTube -- sorry if they get taken down before you can enjoy them. If you find others -- share the links here, too! You can also surf over to the the…
