Re-read Martin Esslin's "Theatre of the Absurd" this weekend

I first read this book about 20 years ago, and it began my journey on the Yellow Brick Road to Director City. After years of directing and looking at the book again, I am still on my quest to discover not what theatre and directing means to me, but what I should mean to it. It appears that my passion for the Work is not solely as an entertainer and collaborator, but an artistic philosopher. I do not wish to create experiences that are heady or pretentious, but born out of human need, true… Continue

Light Plot Deconstructed Review

Here is a review of a new text by Gregg Hillmar, lighting designer, scenic designer, and now book author. I hope that it does the book justice: Light Plot Deconstructed Review by Anthony Rosas I have to admit when I first was asked if I would be interested in reviewing Gregg Hillmar’s Light Plot Deconstructed, I was more than a little apprehensive. I wondered if an AutoCAD user and a Technical Director was an appropriate choice for reviewing a book about lighting, and more specifically, Vector… Continue

Jeffrey E. Salzberg You've been Delled -- and you didn't even get kissed

Last July, I got hired at the very last minute -- 13 days before opening -- to light a show. My laptop computer was dying (rather dramatically so); there was no way it would make it through another show. At the time, I was in rural Vermont; there was obviously no time for mail-order and the closest thing to a computer store was Staples...and the only laptop they had that I could afford was a Dell. I was hesitant to buy Dell. I'd had one 5 years before and the experience was not good -- as soon… Continue

Professional Theatre women

Okay. There doesn't seem to be any other place for this. This is a personal and professional posting. I am the director of a theatre, lovely restored Victorian style with opportunities for directing, acting, designing, and marketing. I have not been able to make long-term relationships work with non-theatre women (go figure!). My salary plus contract labor gigs are enough to live so this is a package deal. Ideally looking for a trained professional (40-50 range) wanting to find a long… Continue
