Well, it's been an exciting (and exhausting) month and a half, but opening night of Anything Goes is almost here :) We are all chugging throat coat tea and ricola and praying no more of us get sick. I had a bit of a relapse of the stomach flu last night but with lots of rest this weekend I should be better going into tech week *crosses fingers, toes, arms and whatever else I can find*) We are performing in Ralston Hall's beautiful ballroom, which lends itself quite well to the 30's…

We could ask ourselves why do we need another social network? Many of us already have Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, Orkut, Friendster, LinkedIn...or other social pages or blogs. How will a network of professional performers and theatrical types help us? I'm hopeful we can build our network to help the freelance lifestyle. Living from gig to gig, feast to famine, makes budgeting and long-term investment difficult, not to mention the headaches of tracking finances and taxes.
I'm hoping that…

I heard a rumor about Bill Murray buying and restoring old theaters. Anyone know anything about this?

A friend and I are taking over a youth drama program in Los Angeles (actually El Segundo), and I am the technical director. The program does not have much in the way of any tech and I was wondering if anyone has anything they are donating or selling for fairly cheap? I would be willling to drive a little way to pick it up. Anything you have that might work, please respond. Thanks!

I'm the chairman of a fine arts department at a community college. I just cut our budget 4+% for this year with an anticipated 10% cut coming for next fiscal year. I'm wondering how other departments are being affected: how will you cope? Are you going to consider raising ticket prices? Doing any outside fundraising, etc.? My problem is my department covers 5 disciplines--music, art, theatre, broadcasting, and philosophy/religion (don't ask!). Any ideas???

From my vantage point as the Technical Representative of a major Wireless Mic manufacturer I have seen a tremendous amount of confusion about what is happening to the RF spectrum due to the DTV transition currently taking place. This spectrum, which up to now consisted of TV channels 2 - 69, was supposed to shrink on Feb. 17th to encompass only channels 2-51. In other words, we are losing channels 52-69. At the same time all analog TV broadcasting will cease, leaving behind only DTV…

So, let's see what we can do here. Nothing much to say as it stands right now. Finishing up a show and starting to move into the next. BUSYTOWN is ending this weekend and I am rolling into pre-prod for Ferdinand the Bull and Rock Paper Scissors, our two touring shows that will have a brief sit down here in Tempe, Az. Ahhhh, the life of a tech in theater! :P Happy Happy, Joy Joy.

The Stage -- UK's best informed theatrical production news source, near as I can tell -- is reporting that:
"A new code of conduct being created by Bectu [
British IATSE, essentially] and the Theatrical Management Association to improve health and safety standards for touring shows could see venues cutting back on weekend performances.
"The agreement could also lead to rising costs for producers and theatre managers, who may have to hire more technicians to ensure…

Editing a story on theatre festivals and competitions for SD, and came across this quote. It's from Angela Hays, head of the North Carolina Theatre Conference.
“The festival provides students with courage and a self-awareness of their own value in a world that does not always value the arts.”
That last bit really rings true today, especially after this:

The Clyde Fitch Report is a great blog for following arts in the news.
Current post details a coming backlash against the arts, check it out here: http://clydefitch.blogspot.com/2009/02/coming-backlash-against-artists-and.html
Here's the first 'graph:
This post is on the multiplicity of challenges we're facing in arts funding. First, in my recent essay for the Fox Forum, I argued that the perennial yo-yo in federal arts funding is a terrible, often tragic joke,…

For those of you who didn't, the new box office system at the Edinburgh Fringe was a colossal failure this year. Tons of money was lost, tickets cancelled -- it was chaos, and has threatened to cause the shuttering of certain parts of the Fest. A report was written by an action committee to determine exactly who was to blame -- and they think the blame rests solely on the Fringe's governing body, for withholding information. Read stories from the BBC and the Stage at the links…

Michael Riedel is, for lack of a better term, the theatre gossip columnist for the NY Post. He is a bitchy queen who knows and loves Broadway, and has connections to just about every production team out there. He's fabulous. I know Broadway isn't the paragon of theatre for everyone (or even me) but I do have a connection to it, and it's fun to read about some of the drama backstage. It's also fun b/c when he speaks truth, it feels like a cool glass of cold water compared to the overheated press…
