Fear and Ego.
Stage fright sucks. In sports, stage fright manifests as "choking", or falling short on the ability to complete an action you've gone through countless times (shooting a free-throw, landing a triple axel). In theater, stage fright manifests as... well, stage fright. Often it results in forgetting lines, screwing up a high note you've nailed countless times, or just giving a less than stellar performance.
