Richelle Thompson A post from the sick bed...er...tech table.

Unless you're the type with the amazing constitution that never gets a cold, most theatre folk (professional, educational, or volunteer) have worked sick - sometimes by our own choice, other times because our jobs/bosses/theatre's expected it. The long and the short of it, we do what we have to to get the job done, the show open, the performance - well, performed.

And that's where I find myself now - sick as a dog and trying to get a sound design on it's feet (ears?) for…

Bari Hochwald Being Belarus Free Theatre

[originally posted at www.culturalweekly.com]

As we watch the live feed from Cairo’s Tahrir Square, I am brought back to similar scenes last December, as the capital of Belarus erupted in protests against a presidential election that international observers said was falsified. Over 1000 people were beaten and thrown into jail. Among them were members of the Belarus Free Theatre, a theatre that began in 2005 during…

Bari Hochwald Protecting the NEA

As the State of the Union address ends tonight I am heartened with the hope that we will find a leadership which works across party lines to manifest the best future for our country. However, I am concerned that the future the President mapped for us did not contain one mention of the arts or our culture.

The NEA is a necessary aspect of the economic life of this country. There is no argument against the fact that the arts are a major industry in our United States. …

Bari Hochwald Theatre’s Outlying Elements

The more I think about theatre, the more I find myself asking what theatre truly is. I am more and more sure we will only know this when we understand the scope of what theatre, truly, can do.

Essentially, theatre must tell a story and that story, using as many senses of the human imagination as possible, must carry an audience into its depths and heights while, at the same time, reminding them that those depths and heights are within themselves as well.

Bari Hochwald The Launch of The Global Theatre Project

Michelangelo said: The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.”

I thought about Michelangelo a great deal these past five years. It was hard not to since I was living in Florence, Italy…

Meghan O. Koesters The Prometheus Project: The Performance

I apologize to anyone who has been following my blogs regarding The Prometheus Project, I was unable to commit to writing it, time-wise, due to circumstances beyond my control (i.e. a death in the family, class, work, etc.). However, I am happy to report that the show went up this past weekend and it went very well.

To recap a bit of what I wasn't able to write on, the last few rehearsals had its' trials. On the Sunday before the show we had our technical rehearsal. I…

Meghan O. Koesters The Prometheus Project: Religious Oppression

The last few rehearsals have been focused on representing religious oppression in a way that is not offensive and representational of all religions instead of just a selected few. Since my director is in the show, he has enlisted the help of two other instructors to assist in the directing, so I have 3 directors that all have contrasting ideas on how to represent religious oppression. Thankfully, my fellow Promethei (Prometheuses?) have a simpler time with their oppression as it is not quite as… Continue

Meghan O. Koesters The Prometheus Project: Talking It Out

Tonight's rehearsal focused on more of the script then the previous one had. The most notable part of the rehearsal was spent on dividing up the lines. In this particular play, Prometheus is being split into 6 different characters or groups, with each getting their own lines and movement. We discussed where we would be in relation to the space and what part of us would be tied up. I'm going to be tied to the center Prometheus' left leg though it will most likely be my right leg that gets tied.… Continue

Meghan O. Koesters The Prometheus Project: Acorns and Potatoes

Tonight was the first rehearsal of the Prometheus Project. I have learned that this is to be a movement-based show (primarily Butoh and Laban movement) and I am very excited to see how it turns out. I am to play the role of Prometheus: Religious Oppression, and I hope to do a respectable job for the show. I have been researching religious oppression all week in preparation for this first rehearsal.

The rehearsal took place on the 4th floor of one of the oldest buildings in…
