Welcome to another Photo of the Week RUMBLE!!!!!! OK, it’s not really a rumble, I just like pretending that I’m a monster truck announcer as I’m typing.

“It’s photo of the week madness here on TheareFace.com, with all the bone-crushing, heart-pounding excitement you’ve come to expect from this battle of theatrical titans! The F might be stopped, but the action is just beginning as we get rid of the negatives and put three design demons side by side to see what develops!”

For best results, go back and read that paragraph in a very loud, deep voice with tons of fake reverb-verb-verb. The prize this week is a trio of plays from Original Works Publishing, now on to the photos!

It really is about set design this week. I like that this set – despite only having two big element (the stairs in the back and the pit in the foreground), is still split into so many different areas thanks to lighting, props and blocking. The distressed style is also nice—especially since I’m guessing the stage floor was not actually as dirty as it looks.

More distopia, this time from Phoebe Hall. I like how the lighting contributes to the different levels and areas, and the costuming is as menacing as the set. Plus—I don’t know who the character is on the lower level, but his face is a portrait. A great, unsettling moment.

Another urban distopia. I like the use of chain link fence in this as almost a fabric—coming down the poles, and also collecting at their base. It’s Spartan, divided, and menacing. Even the warm light doesn’t make it inviting—the haze and the divided beams is hostile.

And that’s it! No go vote!

Oh awesome! I only just saw this! I should title my pictures better, that's a shot from The Last Days of Judas Iscariot.

The shot from THE ADDING MACHINE marks a departure for us from non-realistic plays. The set presented some challenges but our TD and Designer, Dave Griffie, came up with this two level set that also has a turntable built into the bottom level. Scenery rotated on and off through the slatted doors as needed. The upper level also had a cyc on which projections were made. The young man's face you commented on is, indeed, a study in unsettling moments. He is both a full time student AND a full time staff member at Fayetteville State University. This is also the first time we've worked with neutral masks (at one point in the play using them in somewhat of a minstrel show atmosphere--ironic in itself since the cast is predominantly African-American on an HBCU campus!) We really enjoyed this tour of non-realism and plan to explore more!
