Putting a Face on Theatre
Hello All--
I'm once again asking the impossible--trying to do something without the proper instruments. My theatre doesn't have a cyclorama, nor do we have the budget to purchase one in the near future. But for an upcoming production we were thinking of playing with projection drops, using images. My question is, is there a cheaper alternative to a cyc that would possibly work?
We do have a scrim, but I can't guarantee that lighting for the actors won't spill onto it and ruin the effect.
Thanks again for your infinite wisdom,
A.B.

First off, what kind of projection equipment do you have? If you want your production to look cheap, go ahead and aim a projector at a bed sheet. This is basically what you are asking at this time. There is a lot more to projection design than just having content shine on a surface such as a cyclorama. Since the cyc is not the ideal projection surface in the first place (very low gain, generally off white or light blue, etc.) There are many things to consider.
Your question is about what surface should you be projecting on. Ideally, you will want a proper projection material. However, on a budget, you may need to look at alternatives. I wouldn't suggest going large to start, there will be too many challenges. I would look at buying used screens from a rental/staging company (many are abandoning old aspect ratio screens, so you can get them for cheap) and adding them to a set. You may also want to consider some of the alternative materials like strech fabric from Dazian or Rose Brand. They are considerably cheaper than actual screen material and can often double for front or rear projection surface. Again, don't think about going for a full stage look, that is unless you have the rest of the equipment to do so, which it doesn't sound like you will.
