I'm assembling a workshop for the next AACT Festival in Rochester, NY in June that will demo free and inexpensive ways to use an old computer for various theatre functions - sound, lights, inventory, box office, and anything else I can think of. I have a Windows XP box, an Ubuntu Linux laptop, and a little Mac Mini. Open source software for Windows is pretty plentiful and easy to find, and there's some pretty good Mac freeware available,but if anyone has suggestions for free theatre software for Linux I'd be extremely grateful. I'm also looking into a Droid tablet, but that may just be for future reference. Thanks all.

PJ- I would check with various manufacturers of media servers. I know Barco High End Systems has a ton in their forum, Green Hippo has some on their website as well as Coolux Pandora's Box and so does SAMSC Catalyst.

Hey Everybody, I am currently working on preparing a talk for a workshop that I am helping to create to introduce Lansing, MI area theatre people to the idea of Media in Theatre, I am currently looking for some videos to show which showcase the different uses of Media in Theatres and was wondering if any of you had some stuff they would like shown off, or if you have any links you would be interested in sharing! I appreciate any bit of help at this point!

Real nice, until you turn on some lights. If you can keep the image fairly small (10' or less) and do your best to keep stage lighting from hitting the screen (including bounce-light from the floor or set), you might get away with it.

How well, do any of you think a projector with 2500 lumens would work in a small intamate space?

I just bought an Arkaos Media Master license, used it on a show the first weekend from my laptop triggered via artnet from another laptop running OnPC. Really easy to use and simple to set up. 8 Layers of running video clips and you can program offline with the free demo software. It's fully fuctional even with dmx as long as you don't mind "DEMO" flashing on every 20 secs or so. Each licence can be installed on 3 machines as well. Only cost around 2 grand.

I used a laptop with the free avmixer software to display stills and play animations. I used a PC, but There may be a Mac version as well.

David- What kind of playback devices are you using? I'm interested in hearing how others have been manipulating/playing back content.

I TD in a PAC that just came with an Eiki lc-x71 video projector (5500 ANSI Lumens) in the booth. I've been projecting video backgrounds onto the cyc for musicals and dance. I taylor the artwork such that the image being projected is either very dark and/or blurry anywhere an actor or scenic elements might get hit by the projection.

For Willy Wonka I used a modified Jumpbacks from Digital Juice for the boat trip and for the transition for Mike TV bit. We prerecorded Mike and put him on a screen embedded into the background projection.

Next I'm going to try deliberately lighting everything, actors and all much as you would use gobos. It might not be that useful coming from the front.

It is far from ideal, but we have been getting a lot of mileage out of it.
