Picture taken early 2006. It's a long story. The old (Prehistoric?) Asolo was shut down and neglected after the company moved across the street, very sad to see. They used it for occasional events but there was a medical emergency on the third tier during an event and evacuating the patient was so difficult it was declared unfit for public occupancy. After FSU took over the museum I'm told there was a discussion to tear down the building and sell the pieces back to the town of Asolo Italy or the highest bidder but the then head of the University saw it, loved it and wanted it saved. There were three entities involved: FSU/Ringling Museums, Asolo Theatre Company and FSU Acting Conservatory. Over alcoholic beverages I will tell you what they each told me about the others but basically they didn't communicate well and I was hired as the on site theatrical expert. For whatever reasons the Museum built the venue it felt suited its' needs best with no interest in accommodating the theatre company using it as a presentation space. So - very little wing space, no fly system - just catwalks overhead. No pit, not much room for FOH lighting, no easy access to the Orchestra seating but: Great Acoustics and a masterful job of restoration by the Museum Conservators. The place looks great. I was the LD from 1972 `til we moved out in the late 80's. The lighting portholes were long gone when I arrived. Some pretty good coves for FOH (tho you had to crawl to change gel & focus) and I managed to sneak some small units in the 3rd Tier Box Booms for Apron sidelite.
